IPTV for beginners

If you have never used internet television before, this page tells you what actually happens, in what order, and what tends to surprise people the first time.

You need less than you think

There is nothing to install on the wall, nobody comes to the house, and you do not need a new television. If you can install an app on your phone, you can do this.

  • A television, streaming stick, phone, tablet or computer you already own.
  • Home internet that is reasonably steady — stability matters more than headline speed.
  • Twenty minutes the first time. Rather less if you set up a phone first.

Six things that surprise people

1. The subscription is not an app

You are not downloading something called Reflexsat. You install a player application — made by somebody else — and type your account details into it. That separation is normal for this kind of service, and it is why we ask which device you have before anything else.

2. The first load is the slow one

The first time the player fetches the programme list it has a lot to collect, and on an older device that can take a minute or two. People often assume it has frozen and restart it, which starts the wait again. Let it finish.

3. Capital letters matter

Account details are case sensitive, and typing them with a television remote is where most first-attempt failures come from. Check character by character before concluding that something is wrong.

4. A cable fixes most stuttering

If the television is a long way from the router, or sits in a cabinet, Wi-Fi is doing worse than you think. An Ethernet cable is unglamorous and extremely effective.

5. The guide and the video arrive separately

The programme guide is fetched independently of the streams. A channel can play perfectly while its guide looks empty or wrong. That is a guide refresh, not a broken subscription.

6. Keep the message with your details

You will need those details again — when you buy a new television, when you reset a streaming stick, when you add a second room. People delete the message and then have to ask for it again.

Your first week

What to do, in order

  1. Tell us about your setup

Message us with the device you intend to watch on and how many people will watch at the same time. That is enough for us to tell you which options fit.

  2. Confirm your plan

We confirm the subscription length, the number of simultaneous connections and the price before anything is arranged, so there is nothing to discover afterwards.

  3. Receive your details

Your account details arrive with the setup instructions for your specific device. Keep that message — you will want it again if you change television or reinstall the player.

  4. Set up your device

Follow the guide for your device, or follow along with us on WhatsApp if you would rather not do it alone. It is normally a five-minute job.

  5. Start watching

Open the player, let the programme list load and choose something. After the first time, that is the whole routine.
